Orange county, like Rappahannock and other area counties, has an ordinance that forbids the dumping of trash from other counties within that county. But the trash contractor has a “special arrangement” with Orange County’s Supervisors, Luke said.
“WE DON’T know how long this will last,” Pete Luke continued. “Orange has got a new Board of Supervisors. And Orange has been getting some complaints about drainage from that landfill.”
That’s why Rappahannock’s Supervisors have asked the Planning Commissioners to make some contingency plans, Luke said. “At least one person, 1 won’t mention who” has said he’d be interested in operating a commerical landfill, Luke said. The Supervisors think there might be more. “So we want to solicit proposals. Three or four people might want to operate it.”
Luke acknowledged that a landfill is bound to become a controversial issue. Somebody’s going to object, he said. “But it’s gonna come down to this, we either condemn some land or we do away with the service.”
