THE number of out-of-staters visiting Virginia by car annually rose by 191 per cent between 1949 and 1974, and their expenditures increased by 170 per cent, | the State Department of Highways ’ and Transportation found in its sixth visitor travel survey.
J. P. Mills, Jr., the department’s traffic and safety engineer, said the travel growth would have been greater except for the energy crisis and the economic recession. “It was a time when consumers became more conscious of their personal patterns of energy consumption and, as a consequence, their travel habits,” he said of the newest study period.
