and watering are essential for keeping a poinsettia looking fresh. Poinsettias should be in temperatures between 70 degrees and 75 degrees F. during the day, but not less than 60 degrees F. at night. The plants should not be placed in drafty locations, since hot or cold drafts can increase water loss or cause chilling, causing leaves to drop sooner.
Poinsettias should be displayed where they will receive the most sunlight. A south, east or westfacing window is more desirable than a northern exposure, Smeal said. Smeal said that poinsettias will not stand overwatering, and underwatering will cause wilting which results in leaf drop.
“When the soil appears light in color or feels dry when touched,” explained Smeal, “then the poinsettia should be watered thoroughly.” If the pot is wrapped with decorative metal or plastic foil, Smeal said, the pot should have a hole punched in it to allow excess water to drain away. While protecting the futniture, the foil or plastic covering around the pot holds excessive water in the pot.
