IN 1897, little Virginia O'Hanlon wrote to the editor of the New York Sun, asking, “Is There a Santa Claus?’’ The newspaper's reply, in an editorial, has become one of the modern classics of the season.
The Sun reprinted the editorial each year at Christmas until 1949, when the paper published its final edition, and other newspapers throughout the nation have carried on the tradition, to the delight of thousands of readers, both young and old.
It was established after his death in 1906 at the age of 67 that the famous editorial was written by Francis Pharcellus Church, when he was an editorial writer for The Sun. Church was also a war correspondent of the New York Times during the Civil War, and established the Army and Navy Journal and The Galaxy Magazine.
