show big increase
State Police arrests for speeding during 1975 numbered 220,284, to far exceed the 159,642 of 1974 and the 101,595 of 1973, says Colonel H.W. Burgess, Superintendent of the Department.
Colonel Burgess noted that the arrests were for all types of speed violations but that about 96 percent of them were for violations of the 55 mile per hour limit. Speeding arrests of drivers of commercial vehicles numbered 32,094 for the year.
The new mobile radar which, mounted on a police car, can give the speed of an oncoming car, was a large factor in the overall detection of speeders, he said, and added that the stationary types are also in use.
Virginia traffic deaths for 1975 numbered 1,030, or 20 less than those of 1974 to give the State its third consecutive annual reduction. Traffic volumes for 1975 were 1.4 percent above those of 1974.□
