George Smith, Supervisor of the George Washington National Forest, requests hunters to be extremely careful of fires during the coming turkey season. The season opens Saturday, April 17, half an hour before sunrise and continues to 11 a.m. each day except Sunday until May 15.

The woods are dry from an extended period of little rain. The Forest has had more fires this spring than in previous years. Warming fires are not permitted. Fires may be built at designated camp areas only but not left unattended.
