Kiser pointed out that moving the sheriff’s department to the jail would eliminate the need for a jailer. He felt that someone would be there all the time to watch any prisoners. (The Rappahannock jail is used only as a lock-up facility for 24 hours; then prisoners are transferred to Fauquier County jail.) Kiser added that elimination of a jailer would save the county approximately $5,000 a year.
CARSON JOHNSON said that the cell block included four cells upstairs and four downstairs. “The upstairs hasn’t been used (for holding prisoners) for a longtime. There are stolen items collected by Sheriff Estes stored there... Seems to me, the county could auction them off,” said Johnson. “The large passageway outside the cells could also be utilized for storage,” added Masterson, specifically mentioning the possibility of storing School Board records.
