Rappahannock County School Superintendent 0. A. Norton agreed. “Chapter 10 is a lifesaver for a small school system,” said Norton. He estimated that the speech therapy program and psychologist services would cost $6,500 if supplied by the school system alone. Public Health Nurse Frances Thornton added that the county had not had any commitments to the State Institution since Rappahannock belonged to Chapter 10 and that “quite a few” former inmates had been returned to their homes.
RAPPAHANNOCK Sheriff William Buntin addressed the Supervisors regarding his request for funds to hire an additional deputy. “We’re so busy, it’s impossible to make a thorough investigation, ’ ’ said Buntin.
Buntin’s figures for the first four months of 1976 showed 55 criminal reports made in comparison to 85 for the entire previous year and 292 papers served in four months, versus 519 for the previous year.
Buntin said his two full-time deputies are overworked, having two full shifts a day on weekends. A new deputy would start at $8,040 a year with the county only liable for one-third of the salary. The remainder would be paid by the state. Buntin felt sure the State Compensation Board would approve the hiring of an additional deputy if the Supervisors did.
