There was a noisy clamor. . . voices raised in exclamation and then uproarious laughter. . .Walking out into the hall, I came face to face with fifteen or twenty smiling, anticipating faces and then realized it was again the time of the year for the seventh grade tour of the high school. As usual our visitors were welcomed by Mr. Wingfield and introduced to various school policies and I wondered if most of them were experiencing that jittery, excited feeling many of us had a few years earlier when in that same position. Tomorrow is only yesterday’s dream and how quickly those dreams turn into today!
Last Friday was a special day beginning first period with a joint program of the National Honor Society and the S.C.A. TheN.H.S. began the assembly with a traditional candlelighting ceremony to induct this year’s new members. Those honored by introduction were Deborah Knighting, Patsy Vest, Malinda Ubben, David Hudson, Scott Jenkins, Brooke Miller, Charles Frye, Curtis Nichols, Ronald Parker, Jeff Foster, Robert Payne, Kelly Perdue, James Swindler, Margaret Johnson and Roger Smoot. Members are chos - en by grade average and character analysis. Congratulations to all.
The Rev. Ronald Wiley was guest speaker for the assembly.
Following the ceremony, the S.C. A. sponsored its annual “Teachers Appreciation Day-” The program was initiated with an enjoyable speech by O. A. Norton, Superintendent, then teachers were presented carnations by the students and were serenaded with selections by the choir. At lunch time the teachers were served a special meal by Mrs. Wood’s home ed department. That started Friday on a sunny note for all!
Well, Saturday was District Meet for our girls and boys track teams. Outstanding performances were given by two of the boys, Fred Frye who literally over extended himself. He scored 14 points by placing second in the long jump and 3rd in the triple jump. He set a new Rappahannock record by jumping 21 ft. 9 1/4 in. in the long jump.
Donnell Carter did a fine job finishing fourth in the 880. Both boys will attend the regional competition this Friday in Richmond.
Mr. Toth would like any persons interested in going out for next year’s cross country team to meet with him Wednesday at sixth period in room five.
