One pat reply from the bureaucrats, when people show up at public hearings to complain, is that taxes are high because so many people are “demanding” so many services. People do expect more from government than they did in the Good Old Days, but it has been our observation that a lot of these so-called public “wants” are really bureaucratic wants. People want simple things like tennis courts and baseball fields; what they get instead is an elaborate bureaucracy that keeps saying it has to have more money so it can administer all these pressing public demands.
THE bureaucrats have a way of generating their own momentum, and the current assumption of automatic pay raises every year—“to keep up with the cost of living”—is a good example. In all of the counties around here people on the public payroll seem to take automatic pay raises as their unquestionable due, the only quibble being over the actual percentage.
We’ve got news for these people: Most of the guys out here who are paying for the bureaucrats, (and where labor unions are rare), aren’t getting any automatic pay raises when prices go up. Inflation reduces their income, not acts as a catalyst for a raise.
Senator Byrd is right. And the first step for reducing the oppressive tax load is to reduce the size of government, at all levels. □
Student trip
Students of Wakefield Country Day School in Huntly will leave for a two day trip to Philadelphia on Thursday. The trip, which is part of the school’s Bicentennial celebration, will include a tour of Philadelphia’s Independence National Historical Park, the city waterfront, the Franklin Institute, and nearby Valley Forge. Funds for the trip were raised by student sale of stationery. □
