Whistlecup tournament
FIFTY-TWO PLAYERS, the largest field ever assembled, will compete next weekend in this year’s running of the Twenty-fifth Annual Rappahannock County Invitational Handicap Mixed Doubles Whistlecup Tennis Tournament.
Five courts will be put to use. Play will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at the home of Dr. Weiner Krebser in Huntly. Players assigned to the court of James J. Kilpatrick near Woodville will convene at 10. Play will start at noon at the courts of I.L. Parrish, Viewtown, and Jay Dawson, Huntly. Judge Rayner Snead has asked his players to gather at 12:30 at his court in Washington.
Winners at each of the Sunday courts will compete for the championship on Monday, starting at 10 a.m. at the Kilpatrick court, located on RudisiH’s Mill Road (Route 621), two miles from Woodville. Silver whistlecups will be awarded the victors.
Those attending the Labor Day finals picnic are asked to coordinate their picnic lunches with Mrs. N.K.G. Tholand, chairman of the Food Committee. On the matter of baked beans, always a hot topic, Mrs. Tholand said she was asking for moderation. She would like “some beans” but not, as in 1973, a hundred pounds of beans. In 1974, following the previous year’s embarrassment of riches, no one brought any beans. The 1975 event was rained out and had to be played off at the indoor courts in Warrenton.
The tournament always is identified as the “25th Annual Tournament,” said Mrs. Tholand, “because it seems such a nice round number.” This actually will be the twelfth year of play.D
