ation. After the meal there is generally a program of special interest to senior citizens. These programs may consist of guest speakers, films, discussion groups, arts and crafts, or just a friendly game of bingo or cards.
Nutrition Services also assists by providing transportation to and from the meal site, for medical appointments, for shopping and for other services as needed by those people without transportation. In some instances Nutrition Services delivers a meal to the home of those individuals that are severely handicapped or ill and are unable to come to a meal site.
FUNDS for the program are provided by the federal government as part of Title VII of the Older Americans Act. Each project is required to provide a ten per cent local match, and Nutrition Services is able to use the money the older adults contribute for the meal as well as the volunteer hours of people who help at the sites to make up the required local match. There is a Project Council that has three representatives from each meal site, and they set the fee schedule for meal contributions and advise the Project Director.
