Pesticide Applicator Licenses—The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Commerce has sent out the private applicator license^ to Rappahannock farmers who passed the test last winter or spring^ The licenses carried a statement indicating they would expire in December 1977. Several farmers have called in and are concerned about this. Just disregard it. Renewal licenses will be sent out in October 1977 which will not expire until December 31, 1980. These licenses will automatically be sent out and farmers will not have to take a second test. For those of you who have not obtained your private pesticide applicators license, and would like to do so, we will have a one day training and test session on Wednesday, December 8th.
Cattle Grub and Lice Control—If you are planning to use one of the systemic sprays or pour-on for combination grub and lice control, you now have 18 days left to do the job. November 1 is the cut off date for effective grub control. None of the systemics are recommended for use on cattle between November 15 and February 1.
Fall Soil Sampling—Each year many farmers with good intentions for having their soil tested early (in Fall) wind up sending in their samples in the Spring. Even so, the Soils Lab was able to keep up fairly well with the Spring runs until this year. During a one month period of time (early February - March) approximately 43,000 samples were sent in to the Lab from around the state. Since the maximum capacity of the Lab was 600 samples per day, the backlog built up until there was over a month’s delay in receiving soil sample results.
The capacity of the soil lab has now been expanded to 1,000 per day. Even so, if you want to receive your soil sample results in time to be of benefit, please send them in during October and November. Fall soil sample results can be used for the Spring A.S.C.S. cost sharing program. They will also be reliable for the following year’s crop.
