THE Rappahannock County Supervisors received a formal re’ port from the Ad Hoc Building Space Study Committee at last week’s Board meeting. Appointed by the Supervisors in response to complaints from the courts and constitutional offices that space provided was inadequate, the Committee visited all county offices and decided that a serious lack of space exists in the clerk’s office, the Health Department and the constitutional offices and for court functions. Their report presented to the Supervisors last Thursday concluded that no building exists in town suitable to use for consolidating all county offices.
To alleviate the overcrowded situation in the court house on a short term basis, the Committee’s report recommended that the Registrar and Zoning Administrator immediately occupy a single office and that the vacated space be released to the courts, the Commonwealth’s Attorney and the sheriff, in that order. In addition, the report suggested that the summer kitchen adjacent to the court house be remodeled as an office for the Registrar and Zoning Administrator as soon as feasible, moving them out of the court house entirely and freeing an additional room. Also recommended was an extension of the rear of the clerk’s office. The report suggested that Health Department officials look for additional space themselves.
AFTER reading the Committee’s recommendations, Supervisor Chairman Pete Luke suggested that the remodeling of the summer kitchen be put out for bids. He estimated that it would cost $3000 to put the building into “working condition” as an office. The appropriation for the project could come out of the building fund, with a percentage allotted for work this fiscal year and the rest of the job completed the following year.
“Let’s don’t be in any hurry,” answered Supervisor H.B. Wood. “Let’s wait and see how one more room works out this year.”
The Supervisors voted unanimously to combine the two offices in the court house and took no action on the proposed remodeling of the summer kitchen.
