CHRISTMAS is a special time of the year everywhere, but especially in this part of the country. Things that other people experience only through Christmas card illustrations are part of our daily lives. Woodpiles and wintry meadows, foxhunters and farm animals, kids skating on ponds and streams (if they’re shallow enough to be frozen), traces of snow, picturesque and bustling towns, classic churches punctuating the horizon, farmyards with geese and turkeys—almost everywhere you turn in this Virginia countryside, there’s a satisfying prospect, a comfortable awareness of tradition and community.
