fact that the highway engineers made every effort to make their cloverleaf attractive through sweeping curves and elegant overpasses, it still is an appalling sight to the sensitive observer. Why? Because it lacks human scale. In the back of the mind we picture ourselves dropped on foot in the midst of these miles of hot, monotonous concrete, beset with the challenge of getting off this vast expanse without first dying of thirst or sunstroke.
The charm of Williamsburg is the charm of a pedestrian world.
I would make the point that man has never fully conformed to the automobile. While he recognizes its merits, he still views it as a thing alien to himself and a world built around the automobile seems foreign and ugly to him. I suppose the human animal will always primarily identify himself with his body and its unaided capabilities and only secondarily with his automobile.
