popularity of the enclosed man or arcade shopping center is predicated on easy pedestrian movement. The monotony of the linear shopping center is avoided as one never passes the same establishments as one circles around to the starting point.
If we take these same ideas and relate them to city planning what we in effect arrive at is the old European model of the town square with all the business, social, civic and religious establishments fronting it. The square itself is an oasis of trees and greenery, affording pleasant relief from the hustle and bustle of the business and social world that surrounds it. Residences circle the outer rims of the town, all within easy walking distance of the square.
I remember a calendar picture of one particularly attractive town on the Mediterranean. What fascinated and charmed me was the town’s human scale. In my mind’s eye, I could see myself strolling easily from my residence into the town’s center and having a pleasant glass of wine in an open air cafe on the square.
