the Kappahannock Supervisors decided in September to authorize Chairman Pete Luke to continue working with the Updikes in their attempts to open a private landfill within the county. The Updikes located a landowner outside Sperryville who was willing to sell them property to be used as a landfill. Holding a contingency contract on the parcel, the Updikes requested a special use permit from the BZA in October. At that meeting, the Board adjourned to untangle legal questions without reaching a decision.
If the application is denied on Thursday, the County may have to attempt to find a way to fund a public operation.
FEDERAL funds for a landfill are available from HUD’s Community Development Discretionary Grant program but Rappahannock’s chances of being awarded funding for this year are very slim, according to Planning District 10 official Bob Abbott. Abbott was responsible for engineering Louisa County’s successful grant application that resulted in funding for an $88,000 landfill project.
