SHERIFF Bill Buntin assured the Supervisor that he still favored the ordinance as adopted. His understanding from the judge’s dismissal of the cases in November was that the county code would only have to be drafted in proper form. Bankston asked that the Supervisors adopt the county ordinance using the same language in the state enabling legislation, otherwise he argued that he as a state law enforcement officer could not enforce the prohibition on loaded guns in the vehicles, if the county code differed from the state law.

Davis vehemently disagreed with Bankston’s interpretation of his police powers as a state employe and added that the county was not empowered to draft a stronger ordinance than permitted in the state code. Bankston had with him a copy of a similar county ordinance adopted recently in Culpeper County. The Supervisors directed Bankston to meet with Davis to draw up a proper ordinance for Rappahannock, to be adopted at a subsequent meeting.

Later, Bankston noted that the county would not have the “much needed” gun law during the current hunting season. The problem with outsiders coming to hunt in Rappahannock is compounded by the fact that the counties to the west close their hunting season
