According to recent census figures which give the county’s total population as 6,093, Hampton (1.158) and Wakefield (1,219) are the only two districts now meeting population guidelines.
Stonewall-Hawthome and Piedmont have two few residents with populations of 1,097 each and Jackson too many with a population of more than 1,400.
Gerk Diane Bruce noted that the county is restricted in how it may adjust district boundaries to achieve the correct populations. At Wednesday's special meeting, she showed the supervisors a computer printout which divides the county into sections following geographic features, such as streams, roads and mountain ridges.
New boundaries for the five magisterial distfics must be drawn by shifting these sections, according to Bruce.

Baumgardner pointed out that racial make-up of population must be considered also in redrawing district lines since any redistricting proposal must be reviewed by the Department of Justice to ensure compliance with provisions of the Voting Rights Act.
The commonwealth's attorney noted that two state redistricting plans developed by Virginia’s General Assembly have been rejected for failure to comply with that Act.
Registrar Ruth Kilby, who attended a special workshop on redistricting last December, is to present several alternatives to the supervisors on redrawing district boundaries.
Baumgardner reminded the supervisors that redistricting will have no effect on this November’s elections, including the special election for board representative from Piedmont District.
