The pilgrimage was made so the members could see and enjoy the magnificent boxwoods which had grown at Ellerslie, an old Rappahannock County manor house near Washington. Ellerslie is no more, but the boxwood growing here in 1815 and presented to the Cathedral in 1926 has been lovingly cared for by All Hallows Guild. This is a group of women dedicated to gardening and who are responsible for the landscaping of the Cathedral grounds.
Open to visitors every day of the year, the Bishop’s Garden is filled with walkways bordered by boxwood, beautiful flowers and herbs. Statues by well known sculptors are carefully placed about the garden.
According to a group spokesperson, all who took the tour agreed that the visit had been an inspiring experience.
