RIPPLES Today I sit beside my lake. The sun shines blight on high. There are no clouds above my head, The azure blue's the sky. 1 gaze on the sparkling water That ripples there until The ripples all have vanished and The water's calm and still. 1 can only see the surface And have no way to know If the ripples on the surface Affect the depths below. And about our lives, 1 wonder If ripples there once start, They affect the surface only And fail to stir the heart. Whether ripples on the water Affect the depths below, Is a thing I cannot answer. I have no way to know. That the stream of Life when rippled, Oft leaves an inward strain: Tho calm and still its face may be In heart it brings us pain. I know because I have met you. Then from you had to part; And the ripples on Life’s surface Lie buried in my heart. This heart you stirred will never be Jlist as it was. again ; Tho your presence gave me pleasure. Your going brought me pain. 1 do not blame you for it now Because this had to be. I shall cherish you forever Deep in my memory. My lift enjoyed the ripples when They played upon its face, But scars within my heart The years can ne'er erase. The world sees only tne surface And has no way to know About the joys and t he sadness Down in our hearts below.
