Jfewspaper Week

Next week is National Newspaper Week, October 1-7.

Said Thomas Jefferson: “The basis of our government being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right. Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”

Papers throughout the country for the next week will £11 the editorial pages with all conceptions of the American freedom of the press.

There will be as many opinions as there are communities. Every community has its own paper, and since the paper belongs to the people, it takes on the personality ofjthe community * There can never .be too much reiteration in marking the value of our free press. When we stop and look at foreigners who have lost their freedom, we. know what our American heritage "means, but often we treat it lightly

We read something like the opening chapters of “Lydia Baity” with a sense of shock in finding that here in America men were■ tortured and jailed for voicing a disagreement with the government party in power. We have become so accustomed to seeing opinions in print that we take it more or less for granted

The coming week will be a good time to remind ourselves of this precious right of freedom. We epeak lightly, “It’s a free world ain’t it, I still gotta right to think what I please.” Speaking seriously, “I still have a right to speak freely. I have a right to criticize wrong, and offer my suggestion for right. I have a right to tell a thing as I see it, and voice my idea of what is best for my country and my community.”
