Economy Measures

The ladies of Washington began a program of economy in the; meeting Tuesday night, October 10, by discontinuing the services of the town attorney, town policeman, and a caretaker for the fire house. They voted approval to investigate tl\e possibility of having a charge for town fire hydrants removed from the town’s expense account.

The street committee reported failure so far in obtaining one person, on a year-round basis, to keep the streets clean and remove trash. . The ladies voted to cancel any salary for themselves but to allow; $5 a month for expenses to the mayor and clerk. Salaries of the councilmen prior to this were $2 a month, and $5 per month for the4 mayor.

Mayor Davjs reported she had talked to William Thacker, field consultant for the league of Virginia municipalities, in regard to having the toll charge taken off county phone sails. This ^ad fol* lowed a discussion at a previous meeting when the ladies expressed an opinion that the county seat in a rural county should be avail-* able to the entire county by phono without a toll charge. Mr. Thacker advised the mayor that if the two telephnoe companies that serve the county, The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co., and the Virginia Telephone and Telegraph Co., would not take any action, to go to Richmond and: see the State Corporation Commission. It was moved and voted by the ladies of the council to write both telephone companies.

Routine hills were paid and the unfinished business was postponed to another meeting to be held Tuesday night, October 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the fire house.
