The festive plant is named for Joel Roberts Poinsett, American legislator, botanist and diplomat. Although he was a Congressman from South Carolina, an authority on military science and a distinguished Secretary of War under President Van Buren, had it not been for his appointment as first U.S. Minister to Mexico (1825-29) Poinsett might have been forgotten. While south of the border, he was attracted to the large flaming flowers we all k n o w so well, brought some home and developed them. In his honor they became poinsett ias.
