Seven New Bridge*

The outstanding Secondary Roads accomplishment of the 'Virginia Department of Highways in Rappahannock County during the calendar year of 1951 was the con. struction of seven bridges.
This year-end appraisal of Richard Worthington, of Warrenton, Resident Engineer for the department, emphasized the top need of the highway system in trying to overcome the obsolescence of Secondary bridges.
There are some 6,800 Secondary bridges of 20 feet in length or more, but many of these structures are taxed to meet the steadilygrowing demands of traffic, with its heavily-loaded vehicles.
But the problem of replacing the old bridges has been complicated, however, it was pointed out by Highway Department Bridge Engineer William R. Glidden in a recent division report, by a steady spiral of increasing construction costs, a shortage of steel, and a lack of trained personnel.
