It has been rdiabtly estimated that for every known case of active tuberculosis in the U. S., there is at least one unknown one. Morever, the best way to protect children from tuberculosis is to x-ray their parents and all other close adult associates._
The mass x-ray surveys are limited to persons IS years and above because the incidence of manifest tuberculosis is far greater in persons above 15 years of age and also because technical difficulties make many x-rays unsatisfactory. Any child under 15 years, unless they are a contact of a known case, are required to bring a request from their doctor.
Although adolescents knd adults up to 45 years provide the most cases of tuberculosis, 40% of tuberculosis deaths are in the age group above 45 years. This latter group are urged to | be x-rayed because their disease tends to become chronic resulting in a prolonged period of communicability,, even though they appear to be in fairly good healthYou
do not have to disrobe or have an appointment for this x-ray. The reports are confidential and are mailed to each individual.
The wise person gets an x-ray every year as they may have come in contact with many cases of tuberenL osis during that time without knowing it.
