Piedmont Feeder Pig Producers Associations has just come out with its agreement form governing its first Feeder Pig Sale to be held August 22 at Orange. Readers of this column will recall that D. D. Miller was selected by local farmers to represent them at the first planning meeting of this organization along with your county agent and other similar representatives from surrounding counties including Madison, Greene, Albemarle, Augusta, etc and thereby is director from Rappahannock.
According to the plans worked out at this meeting the following rules and regulations shall govern the sale. 1. Consignor must own sow at time of farrowing. 2. Each consignor agrees to pay his pro rata share of the sale expense and to advance a fee of 10c per head to the sale organization at the time the agreement is signed. 3. Each consignor shall also comply with the following: A. Have all entries in hands of his county agent by not later than July 11, 1952. B. To have all pigs vaccinated against cholera (the type pf vaccine and time of vaccination to be determined by state veterinarian). Where a permanent type vaccine has previously been used, ho further vaccination will be required. C. To consign pigs that will weigh 50-125 lbs. by sale date, August 22, >952. D. To remove from the auction market before sale time all pigs consigned which do not qualify as to quality, weight and health.
Other plans are: (1.) To mix ownership to make' attractive lots of equal size and quality; (2.) Weight breaks to be 10 pounds up to 100 lbs. add no division between those weighing lOOttflh lbs. ;(3.) Pigs ate to be inspected and vaccinated two (2) weeks ahead of sale date; (4.) Pigs will be sold by Weight; (5.) Pigs will be weighed, graded, and inspected at the market by state men qualified to do so; (6.) Delivery and grading will get underway at 6:00 a.m. on day of sale according to schedule designated by the chairman and all pigs tnu&fbe delivered by 11:00 a.m. This method of marketing, which you can readily see is very similar to that employed at feeder calf sales, has proven very popular and successful in Goochland , County and of course such is the aim of the Piedmont Feeder Pig Producers Association. Interested Rappahannock farmers may get application forms at this office or from D. D. Miller.
Rappahannock fanners purchasing registered bulls at the Tri-breed Sale held at Winchester last Saturday were R. H. Scroggins, D. L. Miller, Jr., A. G Latham, and E. B. Combs. This brings the total to 45 head of registered sires reported placed in the county since November 16 of last year.
The following 4-H Club boys have some excellent Poland China boar pigs for sale: Melvin Williams and Joe Williams who live in “Williamsburg” „ near Chester Gap; Randy Settle of Amissville; and Jackie Sisk, son of Milton Sisk at Sperryville. Such breeders desiring to improve the quality of their hogs are urged to encourage these boys by purchasing from them. Also the herd boar, about 15 months .old, which has been kept by Joe Williams and an excellent proved sire is for sale, all are very reasonably priced.
