Controlled In Tests
New hope for fruit growers plagued by the |ipple. bark borer or pear borer is seen in results of tests conducted by A. M. Woodside, assistant entomologist at the Staunton research laboratory, of the VPI /‘'ricultural Experiment Station.
Woodside’s tests have shown that the insect, which has caused severe damage in some orchards can be 'controlled by spraying with parathion or DDT, or by thorough scraping of the trunks and heavy branches of infested 4rees. - . ..1 v Scraping, to be effective, Woodside says, must remove all loose bark and open all the burrows made by the borrers. Spraying, especially with parathion, must be done with caution, since the materials are dangerousWorkmen should wear protective clothing and respirators.
Three pounds of 15% parathion wettable powder, or 2s pounds of EPN 300 in 100 gallons of water are suggested for sprays, one to be applied in late May and another in mid-June. Woodside says it is necessary in the control of heavy infestations to spray vtwo years in succession because of the two-year life-cycle of some of the borers.
