Freak Storm Hits
La Grange’, Near Slate Mills
A freak tornado, probably part of thetropicaLhufrican that'blew into the area about 6 p.m. Sunday, struck and almost demolished the old red brick mansion, “La Grange," just over the county line at Slate Mills in Culpeper county.
Mrs. Brown and Mrs. Flippen are present occupants of the home which is sometimes referred to as the “old Brown Home."
The storm tore off the roof, blew the lovely old pieces of furniture until some of it was broken and battered beyond recognition. The drapes were torn, silver and china battered and broken, and the interior decorations were made unsightly.
The grounds at the home were destroyed; old-fashioned shrubs, trees, and box bushes were uprooted and blown almost to fragments.
No estimate of the damage has been made.
