Recent changes in the social security law have special improtance for minor children of deceased individuals who served in the armed forces after July 1947, according to Henrietta Mode, representative of the Alexandria social security office.
Until the new law was passed, military service through July 1947, which was the end of World War II could count toward social security payments, but service after that time could not. The new law extends the social security credits to cover military or naval service after July 1947, so that now service at any time from September 16, 1940, to December 31, 1953, may count toward benefits.
Children are not the only dependents who may get monthly benefits— widows over 65, and widows under 65 with minor children in their care may also be entitled to them. Dependent parents may be eligible if the serviceman is not survived by a widow or child. , * Social Security credits for military service after July 1947 will be used in figuring monthly benefits beginning in September 1952.
