The association unanimously adopted resolutions in October urging that the State Board of Education raise the certification requirements for English teachers in Virginia to 24 semester hours, and that the board include the teaching field of English in the next State teaching scholarship program. 1 It was only as recently as last July that the certification requirement for English teachers was raised from 12 to 18 hours by the •State Board of Education, although North Carolina, Maryland, West Virginia, and the District of ; Columbia require 30, 24, 24 and 30 hours, respectively., The goal of 24 hours, set for Virginia by the association, hardly seems excessive, in View of this. It has been endorsed unanimously by the
teachers: They'seem as- confused as the children. Education has become so complex with what we parents call Trills,' that no one seems to know what children are supposed to be studying or are supposed to be taught."
