When the Northern Virginia Power Company took over the smaller companies throughout this section (Luray and Madison), work was begun renewing franchises to make all of approximately the same duration. Washington's present franchise does not expire until 1959 and the renewal discussed now will be for 23 years beginning on that date. Regular legal channels must be gone through before the franchise is accepted.
Routine town business conducted by the lady-council included a request to place a stop-sign at the intersection where Blue Ridge Avenue enters Main Street; setting a tentative date for spring “clean-up” just prior to Garden Week; petitioning the judge to allow free water for the town’s fire hydrants and two fountains; inspection of die road leading to the town trash dump; and accepting an offer by Mr. McDaniel to have suggestions made for improving the street lighting in the town.
The town council went on record as opposed to discontinuing one of the two present daily mail services through the county.
Mr. McDaniel was acompanied by Mr. Haynes, also of the power company, and James W. Fletcher, attorney.
Overseas Soldier Praises
County Apple Juice
A letter from a soldier overseas tells of enjoying the canned apple juice that comes from the “juice plant” at Sperryville.
The letter, signed Pfc. Thomas T. Morgan, relates that the writer and many of the other soldiers first became acquainted with the apple juice when they arrived overseas last October and they've been enjoying it ever since. t.
“When I get back to Louisiana next December I'll be looking forward to enjoying (the apple juice) that much more,” says the overseas soldier. “Thanks a million for furnishing us guys with such a fine and low priced drink.” Billy Kilby, at the Blue Ridge Fruit Growers, states that a rtumiber of shipments have gone for government use and that several times letters have come from soldiers all over the world congratulating the juice plant on the fine product. 4
