Sperryville Dances Prove
Entertaining-and Profitable
Reporting on the recent monthly dances, the Sperryville Fire Company announces with pride that the dance Friday, February 6, continued the gradual growth of crowd and finances for the fire company.
Sponsoring these round dances -once a month was a discouraging business at first Several of the first dances barely made expenses, the .treasurer reported. With this last dance, business is showing an improvement Besides paying all expenses,-and purchasing' a piano (so the orchestras need not use the school piano, the fire company has $204 profit on hand.
The original plan to hold these round dances was met with some fear that the project would fail financially. Square dances seem to make money, but round dances had smaller crowds. Some advocates of the round dance said there were many people who preferred the round dance, and if the orchestras were good and the floor not too crowded, people would come. This- latter idea proved correct.
At the dance Friday night an attempt was made to get everyone to register. The two purposes here were to find out where the people were from and get the addresses in order to notify therh when the next dance would be. It was found that 17 counties were represented at the dance.
Whereas the average square dance is sport shirt-and-blue-' jeans, the* Sperryville dances are strictly coatand-tie. The atmosphere is friendly, and the general pronouncement is “the dances at Sperryville are a success."
