Someone has tried to tel! a story of the l^dy who had the doctor prescribe the following: “Ma’am, get yourself a job—even if it doesn’t pay anything—but be occupied from 9 to 5."

The day some doctor tells me that I’m gonna shoot him—-dead!

It’s not fair to tell that story without the preamble. The lady had always worked. Her habits were geared from “9 to 5” and when'she tried to retire, it just woudn’t work. She was restless and began to have imaginary illnesses.

It is not too far off to suggest that the same thing would happen to most anyone, if, after years of work, a fellow tried to stop and do nothing. Most of us would be miserable. We know that from the acute agony that befalls when enforced inactivity hits; don’t pity the guy who has a broken leg for the hurt in the leg—pity him for the weeks he has to sit and wait for that pesky leg to mend.

A most pleasant affair it would be to print a newspaper, if one could just prfnt the stories that get told. However, and here is the draw-back, it’s difficult to trace the tales down and find out how much is truth and how much is embroidery. Take as a sample the story of the visiting revenuers* in the county a couple of weeks ago. (There’s absolutely no way to know if there is one grain of truth, one ounce, or a pound or a ton, in the whole story.) Anyway, so the reports go, revenuers came into the county; located a still, with mash on hand; estimated that the fellow would have about three imore days to wait before he could make his “run;’’ decided that Monday would be the day to catch him redhanded; and departed to spend a quiet week-end at home.

Bright and early Monday morning they were back on the job—-to find the territory as bare as any scene in the woods! Gone—still, mash, man, and lilcker! Just like they had vanished from a nightmare! A search found the still tfied up in one tree, the worm tied up in another. The bootlegger they sought had finished up his business on Sunday; they had misjudged the timing.

Please do not ask any questions: that’s the way the story was told to me. I wasn’t there; I didn’t see it; and what’s more I don’t believe it.
