Rabid animals are again biting dogs and livestock in this area. Since March 12, 5 foxes, 1 bob-cat, 1 house cat and 1 dog have been found to have rabies in Rappahannock atone. There have been outbreaks in Madison, Culpeper, Orange, Warren, Frederick and Fauquier Counties.
Since the dog as a household pet comes in closest contact with man, prevention of rabies in the human is primarily directed at dogs, in requiring annual inoculation of dogs prior to licensing. If you have a cat which you are fond of, it would be well to have yo^r cat vaccinated also. All stray dogs or cats should be destroyed. Your dog should be vaccinated every year so long as the rabies epidemic threatens. Once the symptons of rabies appear in man or animal it is 100% fatal. Unfortunately, there is no known treatment. Rabies, however, can be controlled and prevented.
