PISTOL OR ATOMIC BOMB, PRINCIPLE IS THE SAME
When a panel of reporters questioned Virginia members of Congress at a State Chamber of Commerce dinner in Washington last week and I was asked my opinion of the prospects for peace in Korea, I was compelled to give a pesimistic answer.
The Korean action is only one part of a world struggle in which the Soviet leaders are applying economic, political and psychological as well as military pressure. The war Started in Korea because the Politburo did not ’believe we would fight there. It will end, in my opinion, only when those who started it feel that i£ to their interest. It is difficult to see what the Soviet would gain now by ending a war in which the Russians have lost no soldiers, while we have los»t thousands, h&ve tied up at least one half of our effective military force and have spent billions of dollars. 1
