Rappahannock Chiefs Lose

The Rappahannock Chiefs came out on the short end of a nine to six decision this past Sunday at the high school diamond in Washington. Mayor Dorothy Davis’ throwing out the first ball (a perfect strike) seemed to spark the visitors from Middletown more than the Chiefs; and they pushed across eight quick runs, when loose fielding by the locals set the stage for some power hitting by Judy and Headley of the visitors who obliged with long triples.
After die fifth inning the big bat of Elmer Foster, who drove home five runs with three successive hits including a double and a triple; and the fancy wrinkles of Junior Hawkins who handcuffed the visitors for the final innings, enabled the local ball dub to whittle down but not overcome the big lead built up by Middletown in the early nnings. From the fifth on, the Chiefs took command and made a real game foit.
No doubt the Chiefs will improve as they gain experience playing together ; and when the reader con- ^ siders that Middletown led the league last year, it looks as though the Chiefs are due for a good season.
Next Sunday, May 10th, the Chiefs travel to Winchester to play the White Sox of that town in a game scheduled for 3 p.m. Support such as was shown at the season’s opener* will surely prove a big factor in keepihe local hustlers scrapping through-out the year, so come on out to the ballpark whenever the boys are playing. .
