Kelly Updike, son of Mr. and Mrs. John B. Updike of Washington, tied for high honors at the Northern Virginia Extension Livestock Judging contest for 4-H club members held Saturday at Staunton. Billy Custard, of the Augusta team, furnished Kelly his keenest competition each making a .total score of 397 of of a possible *0.
The Rappahannock 4-H’ers did especially well in winning third'place in team competition against 8 othre counties. The team was composed of Kelly Updike, Newbill Miller, Archie Bailey, Jr., and Jacob Sisk. These young men had had but a month’s coaching prior to entertng the district contset
Augusta county which had the ■winning state team in 1952 won the district contest with a total of 1069 points. Other teams placings were: 4th, Rockingham, 997 points; 5th, Loudoun, 971 points; 6th, Frederick, 959 points; 7th, Albemarle, 944; 8th, Page, 919 points; and 9th, Fairfax, 863.
Each team judged a total of six classes; a market class and a 'breeding class of sheep, cattle and swine.

the state short course for a
•ks training, June 22-27th, at con' Jon of which will be held the state 'Wide contest to determine Virginia's representative team at the National Contest held during the International Livestock Show at Chicago in the fall.
The Rappahannock team will compete at the Tri-Breed Show and Sale to be held at Winchester on Saturday of this week where a tdtal of $76-50 is offered in awards by the Farmers and Merchanst National Bank, National Farm Loan Association of Winchester and the Shenandoah Production Credit Association.
