Fred Dreiling, associate horticulturist of V.P.I., visited a number of apple orchards in the county recently with the county agent and that evening discussed his observations with a pitifully small gathering of growers.
Dreiling reported apple set as follows: Winesap, good; Stayman fair; Delicious, light to poor and scattered; Yorks, spotty as this is an off year as a whole in the county; Golden Delicious, off year; Rambo, good set.
The insect and disease situation is briefly as follows:
Frog Eye—a black rot organism on foliage which traces back to blighted twigs where it entered after the heavy fire blight last year. While not alarming at present, this could cause trouble later on in the season. If weather is wet or damp last of June and first of July, put on a material like Ferbam or Captan. Watch out for this disease carefully.
Scab—there is some, particular ly on Rambos, but not alarming. The regular spray program timely applied should control.
Rosy Aphids—scattered infestation, not enough to spray for, also will soon be leaving to go to another plant.
Red Mites—one orchard heavily infested with 10-12 mites per leaf. Did not know whether this orchard received m dormant spray or not. Where mite infestation is this heavy, spray now using parathion or EPN or Aramite will control.
Leaf Roller—none found.
Cedar Rust—found on one tree in one orchard; nothing to be
