Chiefs Even League Record
With 8 - 6 Victory
Behind the fine pitching of Junior
Hawkins and Ned Settle, the Rappahannock Chiefs won their first league victory at Winchester Sunday, May 10, by an 8 to 6
count. In a slow-moving game
that saw the lead change five
times, the local boys wore down
each of the five pitchers used by the White Sox to gain the win. Elmer Foster continued to show the way for the Chief hitters as
he collected a single and a double, while Charles Dodson, Ned Settle
and Pete Clater netted a pair of singles each.
The big blow of the game, however, was pounded out by the winning
pitcher, Ned Settle, as he came through in the ninth with a bases-loaded double. While winning, the Chiefs were only able to touch to Winchester hurlers for eight hits. Ten baaes
on balls, plus some sloppy fielding
allowed plenty of the Rappahannock boys to get on base. Although
8 runs were scored, 21 other Chiefs were left«stranded on
the tv'ses as the scoring punch
was JM>ing time and again.
^ Vfinl turn-out of local fans
heldicr-v-e Chiefs put this game
aw/.y. Rappahannock fans outnumbered
the Winchester fans by
close to ten-to-one. No question about it, this enthusiasm aided the
Chiefs considerably in winning.
