The place of the family gathering for the past three years, a-top the Red Oak, is the original grant of land bought by William Johnson 1 in 1764. The deed of grant was written on sheep-skin and is in the possession of William H. Johnson of Culpeper. The men view with pride that the land has been in the family for close to 200 years. (The ladies still think it’s hot up there at the Fire Tower.)
When asked what the family seemed famous for, one member of the clan said, “Well, first I’d say healthy appetites. Second, I guess we are marked by bald heads.”
It was then suggested by a questioner that maybe the third family marking could be a keen snese of humor. The suggestion was accepted. The clan member then added that a fourth family mark might be an attitude toward work. “They seem to consider it a necessary evil,” he said, but out-of-family comment was that the family members appear to be conscientious about attending the ‘necessary evil.’
