Baal. They had been doing both as many people are doing today* serving mammon and in outward appearance appearing to serve God.
To settle this indecision, Elijah called for a very dramatic test of the power of each god. The prophets of Baal, which were several hundred and the people were to gather on Mt. Carmel, with only Elijah representing Jehovah. Here they would prepare two sacrifices and the God who answered to the prophets’ prayers with fire would be the God to worship. The prophets of Baal prepared their sacrifice but no fire came and lighted >the altar. Elijah made sport of them telling them to cry louder, maybe Baal was asleep or away but still no fire came. Then he went over to the simple altar he had prepared and commanded that it be drenched with water so as to avoid any possible suspicion of someone setting fife to the sacrifice, and he then offered a simple prayer to Jehovah imploring God to vindicate his faith in Him by sending fire. The fire immediately came and consumed the sacrifice; altar, and licked up the water in the trench about the altar. This established the fact that ffe is God and that He does answer the prayer of His faithful servants. This aso revealed that Baal is nothing but an idol having ho power whatsoever.----~ . A$ the God> of parity, holiness-, and righteoifsnesS. He is also the Gover-' nor of the universe and as such, is the God of Judgement and destruction upon those who refuse Him anad spurn His love.
There are several lessons we receive from this lesson on Elijah and Ahab. First, of all God is alive and all governments are subject unto Him. If they honor. Him, they are blest of him, if not the axe of judgment must invariably fall upon them sooner or later. Another lesson is: In times of stress and national bpostasy God is able to raise up men who are not afraid to call men back to God. Another is: They who dare to be brave for God may safely trust Him for protection. We also learn how great may be the power of aft individual life. In times of national apostasy God is busy preparing His instruments for His Work. It is general y under a deep sense of sin, or through deep waters, that God leads to*real acquaintance with the truth. This He did to Israel through the famine and die Prophet Elijah. Idolatry in any form is a curse to any people whether k be king or layman.
