uur country (you and me) has about seven and a half million dollars invested in public storage facilities for 850 million bushels of wheat and 900 million bushels of com. In 1953 produced a billion one hundred ninety million bushels of wheat and a billion two hundred million bushels of corn and a billion two hundred million bushels of oats. With wheat acreage allotments for the 1954 crop year farmers seeded the diverted acres to another small grain—oats, barley, rye and thus the total bushels will be about the same.
In 1953 common public storage was found available for 1,565,000 bushels. The 1954 small grain crop Virginia wise is space available shorter than usual because of the carry over. Boats in James River , and Chesapeake Bay are full—but few more are available, many public storages are full.
While small grain, especially wheat is not generally thought of as a cash crop in Rappahannock our farmers had difficulty in finding storage space last year. Nearby elevators were filled from crops maturing ahead of us because of an earlier season. Some wheat had to be sold on a glutted market, other crops hauled to Balti—more. As sure as night is coming so is small grain harvest. You planted within your allotment and seeded oats or barley—it is your problem and up to you to solve it. You have about 60 days to do so.
