Armyworm Outbreak

Virginia’s first definite armyworm “outbreak of the year 'has been reported in southeastern Va.
Arthur P. Morris, associate entomologist at VPI, says damage reported so far has been only to oats, but the pests will readily attack other small grains and grasses. If the worms remain unchecked, serious damage can be expected.
Outbreaks are expected in other parts of the states, and farmers are alerted to be ready for them.
Spot treatments are often practical when armyworms are found migrating from one crop to another. In such cases the insecticides can be applied to border strips, roadways, and hedge rows around infested fields.
Toxaphene, TDE, DDT, -and methoxychlor at about the rate of two pounds actual material per acre should control the worms effectively. However, of these insecticides, methoxychlor is the only
