Research in disease of large animals is relatively new in Virginia. But already it’s paid off handsomely. In the last three years, for instance, have been: the discovery that a mysterious malady Called hyperkeratosis (X-disease) Was caused by contact with highly chlorinated naphthalenes; and the development of a new vaccine for leptospirosis. These two projects alone have returned to Virginia fanners around $40 for each 50c spent in research. The benefits, which will keep; on accumulating through the years, are not easily measurable on a national scale. I Both of these diseases with the tongue-twisting names had puzzled arid plagued cattlemen for many years. Research on X-disease was dope primarily by Dr. W. B. Bell, now associate director of the Experiment Station; on leptospirosis by IW. G. Hoag, who now heads up| the three-man animal disease research unit. The books haven’t been closed yet, Research on various phases of both diseases is continuing. . ■
