Com ear worms—which usually beat the consumer to the first tender ears—can be controlled with very little trouble, report entomologists at VPI.
In small gardens it is probably easiest to dust- the silks of the com with 5 percent DDT dust. Apply the dust directly to the silks when about 3/4 of the silks are showing, and again when a few of them begin to turn brown. The moth lays the eggs on the.silks and when they hatch out, the small worm feeds there before he eats into the ear itself.
For large plantings, use a power sprayer, and a DDT-mineral oil emulsion. This spray has been found most effective for ear-worm
