Chiefs Win 10-9 Over Stevenson
Under the sweltering heat of the 4th of July sun, the Rappahannock Chiefs sweated theirs way |o a 10-9 victory over the Stevenson club. Though , minus several regular players, the Chiefs closed their ranks and played first class ball all the way round.
Piling up a 6-0 lead in the second inning, the Chiefs stayed ahead all die way though Stevenson narrowed the lead to 1 run ' several times and threatened to move ahead. (This threw a scare into the spectators who had seen the Chiefs pile up an early lead in the Away game with Stevenson, then finally lose as the Stevenson team caught up and passed them, making 1 or 2 runs an inning).
Junior Hawkins, who also pitched Sunday’s game, went 5 innings for the Chiefs and was credited with the win. He was jjp' lieved by Clater in the sixth, who held the A. C. to a minimum of hits until Ned Settle went on the mound in the eighth to finish the
game. ‘
The big 6 run inning began with singles by Ned Settle, Charles Dodson, and Edward Clark. Bobby Menefee followed suit, bringing in Dodson and Settle. J. Hawkins grounded out. Pete Clater was safe on an error. A sizzling triple by B. Clater scored Menefee and Pete Clater. Pullen flew out to left field advancing Clater and Roxy Clater got into the play with a double that scored B. Clater.' Stevenson’s pitcher bore down to strike out N. Settle and end the rampage. A 6-0 score stood until the 4tn when 2 triples, 3 singles and an error give Stevenson 5 runs. George Pullen tripled and then scored on an error to move the Chiefs to a more comfortable 2run lead in the fourth. .
