I read an article the other day criticizing the starting ;of a conservation with a comment on the weather. The author seems to think that like cussing is a sign that your vacabularly is below par, so talking about the weather is indicative of a lack of interesting thoughts.
I can’t agree without a reservation or so. “Lovely day, isn’t it,” and “Good rain we had last night” have helped me out of many an awkward, pause. I believe they have likewise put the other person more at ease. In those first few comments, you can sorta feel a person out—see his attitude. •
The weather’s interesting too— what more reason to talk about it, it’s filling, it’s interesting and it’s always with us. I just hope Bert Massie didn’t read this bit of sacrilege. When she talks about the weather, she means business, and when you talk she listens.
