Enclosed is my check for $2.00 in payment for one year's subscription to the News. I first came to Rappahannock to my grandfathers’* plantation “Quiet Dell” located on the Rush River just across the branch road leaving "Washington by the County Jail—-down grade from the Mt. Salem road to the old Jett Farm— then down the flat for a long way to the river and passed an old mill.

} used to take a sack of corn to be ground each Saturday, wait for it and then take it back to Quiet Dell. That was about 1867, I had my sack of shelled corn, fresh from tihe shelter, and my load was rather shifty on the bare back of old ‘fCopper Bottom,” the pacer horse. The sack shifted and it always propped from the horse’s back to tihe ground at least once. The memory of waiting until a rider came along, got off of his horse and tossed the sack of com "back qn my horse and braced me up have been in my mind ever since, even though it has been almost 90 years ago. I am no# in my 95th year and my doctor tells me that I should live to be at least 105, as there is nothing wrong with me. ! I was bom in Front Royal on May 21st, 1862 — 2 days before the Battle of Front Royal and was put in a large stone fireplace-with my mother in the two story old Dr. Anderson Brown house. Dr. Brown had brought me into the world. This house is now the Charlie Samuels apartment house on Chester Street runs into Crescent St,, close to the present.library. I had the pleasure of going to school to Miss Mary Simpson.
